SEO is one of the most valuable channels for a small business: people searching for what you sell are already interested. It is also one of the hardest to price, because "SEO" can mean anything from a one-off audit to years of content and technical work.

This guide uses survey data to show what SEO really costs in 2026, what each pricing model includes, and how to avoid paying for recommendations nobody implements.

How much does SEO cost per month?

The most cited benchmark is Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers:

Provider type Average monthly retainer
SEO agency $3,209
SEO consultancy ~$3,250
Freelancer
,349

The most common retainer band in that survey was $501–

,000 per month, but the average is pulled up by agencies serving larger clients. Among US and Canadian providers, the large majority charge more than
,000 per month.

In Europe, prices are somewhat lower but follow the same pattern. In Spain, for example, SEO for small or local projects typically costs €400–€1,200 per month, and €1,500–€3,000+ in competitive markets (Asest) — for SEO alone.

SEO pricing models

Model How it works Typical range
Monthly retainer Ongoing work for a fixed monthly fee $500–$5,000+; agency average $3,209
Hourly Consultants and freelancers billing time Roughly $75–
50+ per hour
Project Audit, migration, local setup $500–$5,000+ per project
Per article Content written for search
00–$500+ per article

What does an SEO retainer actually include?

A good retainer covers:

  • Technical SEO: crawlability, indexing, speed, structured data.
  • On-page work: titles, descriptions, headings, internal links.
  • Content: new articles and pages answering customer questions.
  • Local SEO: business profile and consistent listings. See Local SEO Pricing.
  • Reporting: rankings, traffic and conversions.

Many cheaper retainers only deliver recommendations. Someone on your side then has to write the content and make the changes. Ask what is implemented versus advised.

What SEO retainers usually leave out

  • GEO. Visibility in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews is often a separate service, with managed retainers starting around $3,000 per month (Pepper). See GEO Pricing.
  • Social media and email, which reuse the same content but are separate retainers.
  • Content volume. A retainer may include one article a month, or none.

Why SEO costs what it does

SEO agencies bill for specialists' hours: technical auditors, content strategists, writers and link builders. Content is usually the biggest ongoing cost because useful articles take research and writing time every month.

A lower-cost way to get SEO done

An AI-native growth agency runs the research, writing and on-site work through AI workflows built on your brand profile, with people directing and you approving. Because production is not billed hour by hour, SEO can be included in a wider plan rather than sold as a separate retainer.
